Day 8: Port Orford, OR to Crescent City, CA

The butt soreness has reached a new level of ouch.  “Butt Buttr” and “DZ Nuts” can’t even help the pain in the ass, literally.

But in better news, we have made it to California!  Pushing through two states in a week has been hard on the body but an amazing ride and experience.

Today’s 85-mile ride was again scenic and beautiful along the Southern Oregon coast.  Countless gorgeous beaches, waves, rock islands, wildlife, and did I mention butt and body soreness!?!?

The day started in Port Orford, Oregon, where we took down camp, should have gotten coffee and a way bigger breakfast, and headed out south towards Brookings, approximately 50 miles.  The ride had some climbs, great shore-lined roads, and a 345-foot bridge (renamed Virgil’s Bridge) that we happened to stop at right around lunch.  Well, you can imagine what might have occurred with Max and Jesse onboard, even in front of a huge religious group spreading their beliefs.  Thank you Shane for the good sub-terminal lunch snack.  What a great way to spice up the ride.

After the stop, we all pushed on towards Crescent City, CA.  This 30 miles was by far the most strenuous and painful of the ride.  The terrain was not difficult, but the tolls of the 500-plus ride so far, have been taxing on our bodies.  Crossing the state line into California was uneventful (besides Cody smuggling some fruit in his cycling jersey) but made us all realize the size of this state when we all passed the sign for San Francisco…360 miles!

The shore-lined Route 101 turned inland and the roadways started to become lined with Redwood trees.  Again, an unreal sight to see. I personally cannot wait to ride through the huge Redwood Forest tomorrow in route to Tinidad, CA.

Tonight we are very fortunate to be staying with Pep’s brother.  They are an amazing group of people with unreal hospitality.  Upon our arrival there was an enormous dinner prepared for us, hot showers, laundry, and the best organic soap on the market, Organic Essence.  Check this stuff out, it’s amazing:

Tomorrow is a shorter day headed up into the Redwood Forest, with some much dreaded climbs.  Off to Trinidad in the morning…
